What is a fundamental duty? Human beings are conscious about
fundamental rights. Man possesses mind, heart, choice, the acute
awareness of right from wrong. It is his fundamental duty to lend a
helping hand to his less fortunate brethren. Khushii (Kinship for
Humanitarian, Social and Holistic Intervention In India) has always
worked towards the upliftment of the underprivileged and its mission
is to ‘empower people through a process of holistic intervention.’ We
at Khushii have always worked towards bringing about a change
which may seem small but has made an impact on the groups that
we work with. Our small but sure steps in areas such as health,
education and support to the aged may not have revolutionalized the
system but they have made a positive difference to the lives that we
have touched. Two of our objectives has always been to work with
street children and children with disabilities to mainstream them into
the society. To fulfill these objectives we have partnered with 2
worthwhile NGO’s in Mumbai.
Helen Keller Institute For The Deaf & Deaf-Blind
Khushii has taken up another challenge this year of partnering with
the “Helen Keller Institute For The Deaf & Deaf-Blind”, a pioneering
institute in India. This NGO in fact was one of the first in Asia who
started years back a programme for Deaf and Deaf Blind children.
Their belief is ‘that no one is incapable of being taught, no one can do
without education and it is the fundamental birth right of every child to
be loved and educated.’ These beliefs inspired us to network and
support them in their endeavor.
Helen Keller Institute for The Deaf & Deaf-Blind was started with the
very ideas to serve the severest handicap groups of Deaf children
with/without an additional disability and the Deaf blind multiple
handicapped child for whom no services existed in the past.
The Institute was established in July 1977 by the founder member and
Director Ms Beroz N Vacha with 2 visionary teachers supported by the
Executive Committee of President, Trustees & Board Members.
It is also the first institute in India to follow the philosophy of "TOTAL
COMMUNICATION" in teaching the Deaf, Deaf Multiply Handicapped
and Deaf blind. Its vision is to create, build and develop services for
the Deaf / Deaf Multiply Handicapped / Deaf blind children and young
adults through Day-Care/Residential Facilities and other ancillary services.
The Institute has won several National and International Awards for
several of their projects. Today their vision is a reality and it has
created opportunities, opened doors to various services to Deaf blind
persons challenging their and our strengths and abilities in the
society. It is a story of Strength, Faith, Anxiety, Adventure and Achievement.
SUPPORT (SOCIETY UNDERTAKING POOR PEOPLE’S ONUS FOR
REHABILITATION)
It took Khushii 3 intensive months to identify a genuine and worthy
NGO that was making a significant difference in Mumbai. After much
deliberation, Khushii has decided to support the NGO; SUPPORT.
SUPPORT aims to eradicate substance use among street children
and homeless youth to prevent high-risk behavior. To encourage
street children and homeless youth to give up their drug habit and
reduce risk behavior through a process of detoxification, rehabilitation
and mainstreaming.
This program serves as a bridge for children trying to build their lives
away from drugs and desiring to become part of the mainstream. In
the rehabilitation program the children go through a process of rebirth,
giving up his old identity and creating a new one. On completing the
program some children return to their families, some go to regular
schools and some may get trained in vocational skills for future
employment.
Over the past few years SUPPORT has strived hard to meet the
challenges of drug using children. It has rehabilitated hundreds of
young drug users to enable them to join the mainstream and to live
with dignity. |
