Ten-year-old Nishar lives with his parents and two brothers in Sangam Vihar, Delhi. His parents are barely educated, with low family income. Due to their elder son’s disability, they had high hopes to educate Nishar and give him a better life.
However, Nishar’s progress at school was below par and even a private tutor did not help in correcting the situation. Nishar was unable to read even small words. He could not understand the sound of alphabets in either Hindi or English. In mathematics too, his written performance was abysmal. Owing to this, his confidence was low and he also suffered from attention deficit.
Nishar’s mother shared her concern with KHUSHII’s counselor who then had a few evaluation sessions with him. We found that he was a child with average intelligence, but was slow to grasp concepts. We designed an Individualised Educational Plan wherein we included different teaching-learning activities to develop his interest in studies. The plan helped him understand phonetics which improved his ability to read and write. We used Behaviour Modification Techniques to build his confidence and self-esteem.
Nishar has demonstrated remarkable improvement and a keen interest in the sessions. His concentration and attention span has also grown significantly and he is well on the way to matching his peers in studies.
